The historic Mount Zion Baptist church under the leadership of Dr. Leroy M. Cole will be celebrating its 110th anniversary on Sunday August 18, 2019 at 10:45 a.m. under the direction of Sister Sharlene Johnson. The theme this year is Higher Ground.” The scripture reference is Habakkuk 2:2 which reads, And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.

On Friday, August 16, 2019 at 7 p.m. the Worship Arts department, under the leadership of Brother Artis Worthington will present a musical entitled “Let Mt. Zion Rejoice.On Saturday, August 17th, 2019 at 7 p.m. there will be a formal banquet catered by the infamous “Ms. Kitty’s Catering.”  

Mount Zion Baptist Church stands as a historic symbol of the local African American community. Founded in 1909, Mt. Zion in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, during the race riot of 1921, was completely burned. The church building was rebuilt in 1952 on its original site. On September 5, 2008, Mt. Zion was listed in the National Register of Historical Places for its rebuilding efforts in the Greenwood community following the Tulsa Race Riot.For 50+ years, the esteemed Dr. G. Calvin McCutchen who was called home to be with the Lord this year was aninfluential leader at Mt. Zion and within our community. Most recently, under the leadership of Dr. Leroy Cole, through God’s grace and faithful members we have undergone a complete renovation of the church.

The guest speaker for the occasion on Sunday is Dr. Darien K. Bolden Sr, Pastor of First Missionary Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach, Fl. The colors for the occasion are Emerald Green and Silver.
